NASHVILLE – Nathan Horton got the tying goal with 26 seconds to play in regulation, then scored the winner in the shootout to lift the Panthers to a 5-4 win over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night.
"It's nice to get rewarded there," Horton said of the tying goal. "You have to learn to find ways to win, especially for us, we're trying to stay in the top eight in the Conference."
Preds coach Alain Vigneault talked about giving up a late third period lead.
"The way we gave up the tying goal so late, that's demoralizing, but it's no time to hang your head," he said. "We still had our chances to earn the extra point."
Panthers captain Evgeni Malkin scored twice and Josh Harding stopped 25 shots through overtime to earn the win.
After Malkin scored to give Florida a 2-1 lead, the Predators took control of the game with a strong third frame. Kris Versteeg put them ahead 4-3 with 2:37 left in the third.
Harding went to the bench with a little over a minute to play to give the Southern Cats an extra attacker, and Florida took advantage with the late goal.
"It was a strange game," said Horton who snapped a wrist shot passed James Reimer in the dying seconds of the game. "It's not the way we wanted to play, we almost let it slip away in the third."
